Industrial and Systems Engineering
Laura Albert, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research interests are in the field of operations research, with a particular focus on discrete optimization with application to homeland security and emergency response problems. She has authored or co-authored 45 publications in archival journals and refereed proceedings. Her research has been awarded several honors, including four best paper awards and an NSF CAREER Award. Dr. Laura Albert is the INFORMS Vice President for Marketing, Communication, and Outreach. She is the author of the blogs "Punk Rock Operations Research" and "Badger Bracketology." Vicki Bier holds a joint appointment as Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Department of Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she has directed the Center for Human Performance and Risk Analysis (formerly the Center for Human Performance in Complex Systems) since 1995. She has 30 years of experience in risk analysis for the nuclear power, chemical, petrochemical, and aerospace industries. Dr. Bier's current research focuses on applications of risk analysis and related methods to problems of security and critical infrastructure protection, under support from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Bier was elected a Fellow of the Society for Risk Analysis in 1996, from which she received the Distinguished Achievement Award in 2007. She served as the engineering editor for Risk Analysis from 1997 through 2001, and has served as a councilor of both the Society for Risk Analysis and the Decision Analysis Society, for which she is currently vice president and president elect.

Troy Dassler has 15 of experience in ESL/Bilingual Education, with 14 of them in the Madison Metropolitan School District. He also belongs to the National Association of Science Teachers, Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers, and is part of the national implementation team for the Next Generation of Science Standards. He has been awarded the Toyota Tapestry Award, Top Notch Teacher, and ING Unsung Hero Award. He also gave a TEDx talk on bringing nanoscale science to elementary students.

Department of Physics
Cary Forest grew up in Wisconsin, was an undergraduate at UW-Madison and received his PhD from Princeton University in 1992. From there he moved to San Diego and began his post graduate career as a scientist on the DIII-D tokamak, the most advanced fusion experiment in the US at the time. In 1997 he returned to the UW as a faculty member and now carries out research in both fusion research and plasma astrophysics.

Anne Lynn Gillian-Daniel
Materials Research Science and Education Center, College of Engineering
The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) creates new materials to be used in a wide range of applications from medical sensors to solar cells. As the education director of the MRSEC, Anne Lynn Gillian-Daniel creates demonstrations and activities to inform public audiences about materials science and nanotechnology. The MRSEC researches materials such as liquid crystals (found in LCDs), graphene, amorphous metals and many more materials with cool properties that will shape future technologies.

Joshua Hyman's current position is Director of the DNA Synthesis and Sequencing Facility at the UW-Madison Biotechnology Center. His formal training includes a doctorate in genetics (Penn State University), an MBA (University of Washington - Seattle), and a BS in mechanical engineering (University of Michigan). His work experience is varied, from designing bird strike resistant wind shields for fighter aircraft to plant breeding to owning and running a restaurant.

Matthew A. Lazzara is an Associate Scientist and Research Meteorologist at the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (AMRC), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), UW-Madison. He is presently the Principal Investigator of the Antarctic Automatic Weather Station Program, Antarctic Meteorological Research Center and Arctic Satellite Composite Project. In the AMRC, Lazzara supports and maintains the generation and archive of Antarctic weather data, including the Antarctic satellite composite images and the processing of SSECs Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data collected by the AWS network in Antarctica. Additionally, he investigates meteorological phenomena in the Antarctic and conducts educational outreach activities with schools and organizations.

Martin Lichtman is a Physics PhD candidate at UW-Madison studying quantum computing. He holds an ScB in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University, and an MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University. Mr. Lichtman is a competitive speed skater in the winter, and enjoys sailing on Lake Mendota in the summer.

Bela Sandor has been a faculty member at UW-Madison since 1968 after earning a PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the University of Illinois. Dr. Sandor has worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories, the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and has served as a Guest Professor at Osaka University and a Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Dr. Sandor also served as the technical expert for the NOVA documentary, Building Pharaoh's Chariot, which aired in February 2013.
