The Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) service provides secure access to all UW-Madison applications, but for most SSCC users Duo is primarily used for accessing Silo. Connecting to Silo requires multifactor authentication using Duo, the same system used for your UW-Madison NetID, when logging in. Most people use the Duo app on their smartphone, but you can also use a separate hardware token. If you are interested in acquiring a hardware token please contact the SSCC Help Desk in order to have one issued.
When you upgrade your smartphone within the same operating system (iPhone to iPhone, or one type of Android to another) by default, you might be forced to contact the SSCC in order to reset your Duo multi-factor authentication account, especially if you no longer have your old smartphone. Using Duo Restore can help prevent this by using the cloud backup system available to each smartphone type (iCloud for Apple and Google Drive for Android). The SSCC recommends that you turn on this feature to ensure can restore your Duo accounts with ease. The Duo website also offers detailed steps on how to recover Duo accounts with Instant Restore.
