Converting SSCC NVivo Server Projects when opened with Nvivo 15
Periodic upgrades to NVivo are required for security and increased functionality. The Summer '26 update from Nvivo R1 to Nvivo 15 will cause prompts to be displayed to users at first launch. This document will explain how to convert your Server projects.
Nvivo 15 will be released to all SSCC users on Winstat and managed machines on August 15, 2026. You can download the new version of NVivo for personal machines from the Campus Software Library.
After the upgrade, when you attempt to open an existing NVivo Server project that was created using NVivo R1, you will receive the following prompt. Important: do not click "Next" on this screen; select "Browse" instead!

Under Save upgraded project as: select Browse. In the new Convert Project window that opens, change the Save as type dropdown to NVivo Collaboration Server Projects. Otherwise, by default NVivo will try to convert and save your project to your local computer instead of on the server.

In the new window that opens, select your Connection name from the box on the left and in Project name below enter a new name for the upgraded project. We request you use the naming scheme of "Initial Project Creator's Username - Project Title (v15)" to keep track of your file. For example, "Heise - Test Project (v15)". You can always add more users as Project Owners later on, but this helps us keep track of who to contact if there are problems.
NVivo will not overwrite or delete the previous NVivo R1 project file; the server will from this point forward contain both the new and old projects. You can continue to access the old project file on computers that still have NVivo R1 installed, but we strongly suggest you do not because your work across two versions of Nvivo will be "out of sync" - if you collaborate with other users, all users should be on Nvivo 15 together and use the same new file you've saved on the Nvivo Server.
When the Project Creator has successfully migrated your project to the v15 format and confirmed it works as it should, the old file is now obsolete and no longer needed. Please follow the instructions here under "Deleting or Renaming an Nvivo Server Project" to delete the old version of the project. We will be monitoring usage of the server's project files. Old R1 versions of projects will be deleted in one year - August 2027.

Please contact the Help Desk if you notice problems or changes after the conversion.
