Accessing Eduroam Wifi Network

Anyone with a NetID and password can access Eduroam. We strongly encourage users on campus using wireless that they use Eduroam for a more secure internet connection.

 

How do I log in to eduroam?

UW-Madison users must use their fully-scoped NetID, or essentially the NetID email address. The domain, '@wisc.edu,' must be added to the username, or the connection will fail.

Username: NetID@wisc.edu

Password: NetID password

Recommended - Connect to eduroam

Current UW-Madison students, employees, and campus affiliates should use the eduroam wireless network. You must have an active UW-Madison NetID or eduroam credentials from another institution to use eduroam.

How do I access and set up eduroam?

Important: If you do not have an active UW-Madison NetID, do not use this Configuration Assistant Tool. You must use your own institution's eduroam configuration processes.

  1. Click the link below to the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) from the device you'd like to connect. The tool automatically detects your device's operating system (OS), and provides the installer that matches. You will also have the option to choose another installer to download for other operating systems.

  2. Follow the instructions below for your operating system to use the eduroam installer.
  3. Your eduroam username is your NetID email address (NetID@wisc.edu). Your eduroam password is your NetID password.
    • Note: You must use your full NetID email address. Your NetID without the "@wisc.edu" will not work.

OS Specific Instructions 

Windows 11 Computers

  1. Use the Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) to download the eduroam installer.

  2. Open your Downloads folder in Windows File Explorer. The installer will be named "eduroam-W10-UW-Madison".
  3. Double-click the installer to run it. 
  4. Click Next, then click OK.

  5. Enter your NetID email address (NetID@wisc.edu) and your NetID password. Click Install.

  6. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  7. To connect, open your System Network, choose eduroam, and click "Connect". 
  8. Enter your NetID email address (NetID@wisc.edu) and your NetID password. You must include the "@wisc.edu" in the username.

Windows 10 Computers

  1. From the device, download the UW-Madison eduroam installer using the Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT).
    MS Windows 10 eduroam installer will be in the form of an EXE file. It will configure eduroam on your device by creating wireless network profiles.  Whene you click on the download button the installer will be saved by your browser.  Copy to the machine you want to configure and execute.  In order to connect to the network you will need an account from your organzation.  You should consult the support page to find out how this account can be obtained.  It is very likely that your account is alredy activated.
  2. Open the Downloads folder in your file explorer. The installer will be named "eduroam-W10-UW-Madison".
  3. Run the installer by double-clicking on it. If you receive a User Account Control prompt, click Yes.
  4. A blank command prompt will show and state "Profile eduroam is added on interface. . ." 
    Press any key on the keyboard to continue. The profile is installed. 
  5. To connect, open your System Network, choose eduroam, and click "Connect".
  6. Enter your NetID email address (NetID@wisc.edu) and your NetID password. You must include the "@wisc.edu" in the username.

macOS Computers 

  1. From the device, download the UW-Madison eduroam installer for Apple devices using the Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT).
    • Open the downloaded file.

    • Please note that different versions of OS may look somewhat different than the screenshots shown in this document.
      • Note for macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later: After downloading and opening the eduroam profile, open System Settings → "Profile Downloaded" or General → Device Management, select the eduroam profile, and 'double-click to review'.

      • Note for older versions of macOS: The profile may be installed from System Settings → Privacy & Security → Profiles, or from System Preferences → Profiles.
      • If you have the iPhone Configuration Utility installed, the profile will not open with Profile Installer.app( System Preferences in older versions) by default.
        • In order to force the profile to open with Profile Installer.app (System Preferences in older versions), Control-Click (or Right-Mouse Click) the profile, Select Open With... Profile Installer.app or System Preferences.

  2. Verify the profile and click Install to proceed.

  3. Click Continue.

  4. Enter your NetID@wisc.edu as the username and NetID Password as the password. Click Install.

  5. Finally, you may be prompted for your local machine credentials to install the profile.

  6. If you have already connected to UWNet, you may need to forget UWNet for your computer to connect to eduroam.
    1. Open the System Preferences window.
    2. In the Internet & Wireless section, click Network.
    3. In the Network window's left-hand column, select Wi-Fi.
    4. Click the Advanced... button in the lower right area of the window.
    5. In the list of preferred networks, highlight UWNet and click the minus button or move eduroam.
    6. After removing UWNet from the list or moving eduroam, click OK and close any open windows. Answer OK/Yes if asked.

iOS/iPadOS Devices (iPhone, iPad)

  1. From the device, download UW-Madison Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) for Apple devices. It is highly recommended you use Safari.

    Apple Device: For best results, please use the built-in browser (Safari) to open the configuration file.  The profile will install itself after you click (or tap) the button. You will be asked for confirmation/input at several points.  1) To install the profile, 2) to accept the server certificate authority, 3) to enter the username and password you have been given to your organization.

  2. Tap Allow to download the network profile to the device.

    "cat.eduroam.org" is trying to download a configuration profile.  Do you want to allow this? The button "Allow" is highlighted in red.

  3.  Once successful, a confirmation message will appear.

    Profile Downloaded: Review the profile in the Settings app if you want to install it.  The only option is a Close button.

  4. Open the Settings app on the device. Navigate to the new Profile Downloaded at the top.

  5. On the Install Profile page, tap the Install option in the top right. Note: You may need to enter the device's passcode if prompted.

  6. Consent/Reminder that your eduroam username is your NetID email (NetID@wisc.edu).

  7. Proceed through Warning by selecting Install and install the profile by selecting Install.

  8. Your eduroam username is your NetID email (NetID@wisc.edu) and your eduroam password is your NetID password. Enter these to complete Profile Installation.

  9. Navigate to Settings → Wi-Fi and select eduroam to connect your device to eduroam.

Android Phones/Tablets

Use the eduroam App

  1. Download the geteduroam app on your mobile device.

  2. From the device, download UW-Madison Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) for your appropriate Android version (4.3-7, 8 to 10, or 11 and higher).

    Android 11 and higher: Before you proceed with installation on Android systems, please make sure that you have installed the geteduroam application. This application is available from these sites: link to Google Play, link as a local download and will use the configuration from CAT to create all necessary settings. with a Continue button.

  3. Open the geteduroam app.
  4. If the prompt to login doesn't appear immediately:
    1. Search "madison" in the geteduroam app.
    2. Tap University of Wisconsin-Madison.

  5. Enter your login credentials. Your eduroam username is your NetID email (NetID@wisc.edu) and your eduroam password is your NetID password.

  6. Tap Log In.
  7. Your phone may request to save eduroam as a network. Tap Save.

  8. You can now connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi network when you are on campus.

Linux

Installing eduroam on Linux with the CAT

  1. Use the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) to download the eduroam installer.
  2. Use eduroam's instructions to use the installer. These can be found in the CAT

    Linux: The installer is in the form of a Python script, it will try to  configure 'eduroam' under NetworkManager and if this is either not appropriate for your system or your version of NetworkManager is too old, a wpa_supplicant config file will be created instead.  The installer will configure access to: 'eduroam'.  The installer will create cat_installer sub-directory in your config directory (possibly the .config in your home directory) and will copy your server certificates there.  In order to connect to the network you will need an account from your organization. You should consult the support page to find out how this account can be obtained. It is very likely that your account is already activated.  You will be requested to enter your account credentials during the installation.  This information will be saved so that you will reconnect to the network automatically each time you are in the range.

  3. Your eduroam username is your NetID email (NetID@wisc.edu) and your eduroam password is your NetID password

Manual Configuration

  1. Open the Settings menu. 
  2. Select the "Wi-Fi" tab and ensure that "Wi-Fi" is enabled.
  3. From the Visible Networks list, choose eduroam. 
  4. To authenticate the eduroam connection, make the following changes to the settings in the "Wi-Fi Network Authentication Required" pop-up.
    • Wi-Fi security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
    • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • CA Certificate: Provide the USERTrust RSA Certification Authority Root Certificate from https://crt.sh/?id=1199354 ("Download Certificate: PEM" in left column)
    • PEAP version: Automatic
    • Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Username: Full university email address with individual NetID (example: bbadger2@wisc.edu)
    • Password: NetID-associated password
  5. Select the "Connect" button.

There are buttons labeled "Cancel" and "Conenct".
  6. Once the network is successfully connected, the eduroam network will indicate "connected" in the list of Visible Networks.

Note for Chrome OS: Click on Choose Another Installer to Download located underneath the Windows installer option. Then select the correct OS (Chrome).

Create a guest UWNet account

If you are a guest on campus and do not have an active UW-Madison NetID, you must create a guest account to access Wi-Fi on campus.
