Statistics Department Grade Appeals Process
Overview
The Department of Statistics has a process whereby students may appeal their final letter grades in Statistics courses on grounds that the grade was determined incorrectly or inconsistently with respect to the grading standards in the course syllabus. The process is in alignment with L&S policy upholding the right of students to appeal their final grades (link: https://kb.wisc.edu/ls/ls-grade-appeal). The steps students must take to appeal their final letter grade to the Statistics Department Appeals Committee are set forth below. Note: this process may be used to challenge final letter grades only. It is not intended for merely requesting regrades on exams or other assignments.
The process
-
You must first make your appeal directly to the course instructor.
-
Only in the event your appeal is denied by the course instructor can you appeal to the Department’s Appeals Committee. In that event:
-
Submit your appeals through this Qualtrics survey. Make sure to include all the information it requests. Your appeal may not be considered further if any information is missing. If your appeal is denied due to missing information, you must resubmit your appeal within the appeals submission window to guarantee renewed consideration (see Timeline, below).
-
Timeline. For Fall courses, the appeals submission window closes at the end of the following Spring semester. For Spring and Summer courses, the appeals submission window closes at the end of the following Fall semester. Appeals submitted after the window closes will be summarily rejected.
-
-
If your appeal is taken up by the Appeals Committee, you can expect to receive a decision in writing by the end of the semester in which the Committee took up the appeal.
-
The Appeals Committee is the highest authority in the Statistics Department for deciding appeals. If your appeal is denied by the Appeals Committee, and you wish to continue pursuing the matter, you must make a formal written appeal to L&S Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning Administration.
