Morgridge Hall Statistics Graduate Student Office Assignment

Each academic year, offices will be assigned.

The Statistics Department has four offices to assign to Statistics PhD and Statistics MS students in Morgridge Hall.  Eligible students will have the ability to select an assigned desk or a touch down desk for the year. We may not be able to assign a permanent desk to all students.

The office assignment for an academic year will go into place on the faculty contract year start date, which is typically the third Monday of August.

Students who are eligible for a desk:

  • Enrolled in classes for the upcoming fall semester.

  • Statistics PhD student or Statistics MS student

    • Graduate students in the Data Science, MS (MDS) or Statistics: Statistics and Data Science MS (MSDS) programs are not eligible

Desk Descriptions:

Touch down desk (16 total)

  • A space for graduate students who need to get a bit of work done between meetings or as they arrive at the building

  • Personal items are not left behind after use

Assigned desk (70 total)

  • A desk assigned to a graduate student for the academic year

  • Personal items can be kept at the desk

Morgridge Hall Graduate Student Offices:

  • 5606 - 16 desks - touch down desks

  • 5615 - 28 desks - assigned desks

  • 5668 - 21 desks - assigned desks

  • 6668 - 21 desks - assigned desks

Assignment Process:

A Qualtrics survey will be sent to all eligible graduate students, including incoming students, by August 1st.

  • The survey will ask students if they are interested in being assigned a permanent desk in Morgridge Hall for the upcoming year or if they would like to opt in to using a touch down desk

  • Selecting to use a touch down desk will include an incentive to receive priority access to office hour space booking for the academic year

  • We expect plenty of availability for touch down desks to be used when needed.

  • Morgridge Hall will have plenty of additional spaces to get work done, including small meeting rooms and open work space throughout the building.

Staff members of the Statistics Department Space Committee will review survey results and assign offices and touch down desks as requested.

  • Students will be randomly assigned to offices. Students can facilitate office swaps among themselves and communicate office swaps with Nancy Brinkerhoff.

  • If a graduate student does not fill out the survey, they will likely be assigned to a touch down desk.

  • If more than 70 graduate students request an assigned desk, priority will be given based on the following criteria:

    1. Incoming first year Statistics PhD or MS student

    2. Second year Statistics PhD or MS student

    3. Seniority & supported student (5th year -> 4th year -> 3rd year)

    4. Non-supported student

  • If less than 70 graduate students request an assigned desk, a second call will be sent to those who requested a touch down desk and remaining desks will be assigned based on seniority & support status

For those assigned a touch down desk, they will receive priority for office hour space bookings in department controlled office hour spaces in Morgridge Hall, facilitated by Alissa Leppert.

Office assignment notifications will be sent in August. The office assignment for an academic year will go into place on the faculty contract year start date, which is typically the third Monday of August.

  • Students assigned to an office with assigned desks will get to select a specific desk in the office.

    • If students are assigned the same office as the previous year, they can choose to keep the desk they were using or select a new desk.

    • Selected desks will be recorded to the department.

    • Students will need to find a way to indicate a desk is claimed so that others who may enter after know what desks are available.

    • Desks cannot be saved for another student.

If a desk becomes available during the academic year, staff members of the Statistics Department Space Committee will assign the open desk as soon as possible based on the priority criteria stated above.

If the department finds that a desk is not being used by its assigned student, it may be reassigned during the academic year.

Degree Completion Policy:

  • If a student finishes their degree requirements in the fall or fall window period, they will lose access to their desk by the start of the spring semester in January.

  • If a student finishes their degree requirements in spring or in the spring window period, they will lose access to their desk before the start of the 8-week summer session.

  • If a student finishes their degree requirements in the summer or summer window period, they will lose access to their desk by the start of the next academic contract year start date (third Monday of August).
