Working Remotely - How to Connect to SMPH VPN
This article will show you step-by-step how to connect to the SMPH VPN on your supported computer. The SMPH VPN allows access both Surgery and UW Health networks while using a supported computer remotely.
If you are working in the building on a wired connection or a dock, this article will not be necessary since your wired connection should provide the appropriate connection for all available resources, including Network Drives.
Establishing a Connection
Global Protect should be installed on your supported computer already; but if you cannot locate it, please call User Support Services (265-5656) and they can assist you with installing it.
- Launch the Global Protect application by double-clicking on the System Tray icon or by searching for the application in the Search Bar.
- The portal address should be populated already, but if it isn't enter "smph.vpn.wisc.edu" and click Connect.
- If your computer is not migrated to Campus AD, you will be prompted for your Username and Password. Enter your UW-Madison NetID username and password and click Connect
- Th next prompt is to initiate a MFA-Duo prompt on your enrolled mobile device. Type a "1" into the Verification Code field and click the Verify button. Note: You must have the app Duo installed on your mobile device to approve the login.
- Once you've approved the login on your mobile device, you will be successfully connected to the SMPH VPN!
Other considerations
- The SMPH VPN is ONLY accessible when using a computer supported by SMPH IIT.
- These are computers with a DOS sticker on the body or next to the power button.
- If Global Protect is used from a personal computer, you will not get onto the internal network and you'll need to follow these instructions.
- Each user must be granted access to the SMPH VPN via Manifest Group. This is typically completed before or during your IT orientation.
- If you think you don't have access to this service, please email User Support Services (help@surgery.wisc.edu) to have your access enabled.
- After a successful connection, network drive access will be available. You may need to Remap Network Drives using the icon on your desktop. See this article for more information.
