Nvivo Collaboration Server - Login, Open Project, Change Password
Accessing the NVivo Client and Internal Network
NVivo client can be used either installed on your local Supported computer (i.e. SMPH laptop or desktop) or by connecting to a remote Windows server with the Nvivo clients installed. Its recommended that you follow the instructions below based on which type of computer you're working on.
Supported Computer
Launch the application by double-clicking on your desktop shortcut or by searching for it in the Search Bar.
Its recommended that you use a locally installed NVivo client to maximize responsiveness and connection speed while working on NVivo projects. The NVivo client is available directly through the Campus Software Library after a valid NetID login. You will need to contact User Support Services for assistance with installing the application on your supported computer.
Once its installed, you will need to establish a connection to SMPH VPN before you can proceed. If you are working in the building on a wired connection or a dock, the linked article will not be necessary since your wired connection should provide the appropriate connection for all available resources.
Personal Computer
If working on a personal computer, you will need to first establish a connection to the internal network, then launch a session where the Nvivo clients are available. Follow the two steps below in order:
-
Establish a connection using Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) This will provide you with a Windows desktop session that is behind the SMPH firewall.
-
Initiate a Remote Desktop connection to access the Nvivo clients. While in your AVD session, follow the Windows instructions in the remote desktop to Rodan article.

Changing your NVivo Collaboration Server Password
Nvivo Collaboration Server uses passwords that are separately managed from your Surgery or NetID passwords. You will need to change the password manually from the default and if/when you want to make it the same as your other passwords. To do this, follow the instructions below:
- Open a web browser, clear out the address bar at the top of the page, and type the following address: nvivo2.surgery.wisc.edu
- Type the Enter key to navigate to that page

- Fill out the requested info and click Change Password Now

- If successful, you will see the "password had been changed successfully" message

If you do not know your current password and need assistance with resetting it, please contact User Support Services at 265-5656 or email help@surgery.wisc.edu
Notes on functionality
-
Nvivo can be used without the Collaboration Server connection; the projects are typically saved to network storage areas but those can have merge conflicts when multiple users are accessing them.
-
Nvivo 2020, 14, and 15 clients are available in the Campus Software Library.
- Nvivo Collaboration Server access is restricted to members approved by Dr. Carrie Thiessen.
