Namecoach - Recording Your Name [UW-Madison]
This document explains how to record names in the Namecoach name pronunciation assistant
Recordings can be done natively though Canvas or directly from the NameCoach website.
You can access NameCoach via Canvas or the NameCoach website
For New NameCoach Users
- If you have never recorded your name before in either Canvas or the NameCoach website, once you have logged in, you will see a list of courses you have with a red Record Name button. If you do not have any courses, you will still see the top entry that is for Name Profile.
- Select any Record Name button to record your name for ALL courses.
- You will then see the following screen.
- Fill in the top of the form to the best of your ability.
- The bottom half of the form will let you put a recording of your name into NameCoach. There are three ways to do this. See the Recording Your Name section for more information.
If You Have Previously Recorded Your Name
- If you have recorded your name before, either through Canvas, or the NameCoach website, you will see your courses listed with a play button next to your name. You can use that to review what your name sounds like, by hitting any one of those play buttons. All of the courses and profile use the same recording.
- If you want to update your recording, select Edit your info on ANY course or profile.
- You will then be taken to a new page where you can update the Phonetic spelling of your name or re-record your name into NameCoach.

How to Record Your Name
Phone
- When you select phone on the Edit your Name Recording page, you can put in your phone number. Only the digits are needed starting with the area code.
- Once a valid number is put in, a new button will appear that says Call me now!
- Follow the prompts on the phone.
- When completed, make sure you press Submit and Finish at the bottom.
Web Recorder
- Web recorder allows you to record your name using your computer and web browser. To start the process, click the Record button.
Note: You may have to give the website access to your microphone. If the below message appears in the top left of your browser, click Allow.
- Once you have clicked Record, a countdown will start, starting at 3.
- The recording will then start and you can then state your name. Once done, click the Stop Square button.
- You will now be able to review your recording by hitting the play button.
- If you are not happy with the recording, hit record again, and then Record when you are ready.
- When completed, make sure you press Submit and Finish at the bottom.
Uploader
- The uploader feature allows you to upload a file created through some other recording software to be uploaded to NameCoach.
- When completed, make sure you press Submit and Finish at the bottom.
