Microsoft 365 - Box Login Prompt

Information about the co-authoring feature of Microsoft 365 apps using Box as the shared storage location.

Recent updates to Microsoft 365 have enabled a new prompt to login to Box in Microsoft 365 (Office) desktop apps:

Recommendation

At this time, this feature is enabled for the entire UW-Madison M365 tenant. Technical Support recommends completing this login process to add Box as a connected service in Microsoft 365 apps. This will enable co-authoring (real-time collaborative editing) and autosave for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents stored in Box.

Known Issues

When using this feature:

  • Files may be slightly slower to open and close.
  • On Windows, the first time you open a file, you may see the Protected View banner:
Example of the Protected View banner from Word, including the Enable Editing button
You must click Enable Editing to edit and save the file. When you open the file in the future, you should not see this message.

Disabling the Prompt

There is no way to disable this prompt on macOS at this time.

Technical Support can configure individual Windows devices to disable this Box integration and suppress the prompt. Please contact Technical Support to request this change.
