Fiction vs. non-fiction

Not sure whether you want to pick a fiction or non-fiction book? It may be helpful to consider your goal or purpose when choosing a book to read. Review the Fiction versus Non-fiction infographic to help you make your decision.

Fictional literature:

  • is made from the imagination.
  • is meant to entertain. You read to enjoy.
  • uses narrative elements such as theme, conflict, characters, setting, and resolution.
  • often gives readers a theme, message, moral, or lesson.

Non-fiction literature:

  • is based on fact.
  • is meant to give information. You read to learn.
