WiscAlerts Terms of Use

Terms of Use for agreeing to receive WiscAlerts text messages

Terms of Use

  1. The WiscAlerts-Text Messaging service is intended to be used to notify those people on campus whose lives may be saved by receiving emergency alert messages. In the interest of maintaining the speed and accuracy of the message delivery process, service enrollment is limited to the campus community and its affiliates.
  2. Your participation in the WiscAlerts-Text Messaging system is voluntary. If you choose to enroll, you must update your number whenever your personal/cell phone information changes. Adding or updating your cell phone number in the WiscAlerts-Text Messaging system does not add to or update your information in any other campus system such as SIS, UW-Madison Profile, or Workday.
  3. You are permitted to enter one personal cell phone number. The number you enter must be a cell phone number that is able to receive text messages. Once you have entered the number, be sure you receive a text message confirming that your number is enrolled.
  4. The number you provide will be used exclusively for the WiscAlerts-Text Messaging system and will be used solely for the purpose of emergency notification and testing. The only information that will be given to the system vendor is the cell phone number you provide. It will remain in the system until you remove it, or it is automatically removed because you are no longer eligible to participate in the service.
  5. The WiscAlerts-Text Messaging system will use a test-and-respond process. Occasionally you may be asked to reply to a text message to indicate your continued desire to remain enrolled in the WiscAlerts-Text service.
  6. When you elect to unsubscribe from the WiscAlerts-Text service your information will be purged from the system within three days.
  7. WiscAlerts-Text Messaging Terms of Use are subject to change, and you may be asked to read and accept an updated version when you enter the system.
  8. The University of Wisconsin and the WiscAlerts-Text Messaging service provider will maintain the confidentiality of your personal information to the extent allowed by law.
  9. Your information, including cell phone numbers, will not be sold and will not be provided to any third party other than the WiscAlerts-Text Messaging provider, except where required by law. Student cell phone numbers listed in the ISIS system as the student's home phone are considered Directory Information subject to be released under the public records law. Students may contact the Office of the Registrar for UW-Madison for information on limiting release of their cell phone numbers through the ISIS system.
  10. You may incur text messaging fees from your wireless service provider depending upon your service plan. You are responsible for any applicable text messaging fees for any notifications you receive.
  11. The WiscAlerts-Text Messaging service is offered on a “best effort” basis. There is no guarantee that the WiscAlerts-Text service provider or your cellular service provider will be able to send a text message during every crisis or emergency or that such messages will be received on your wireless device. Receiving a text alert message does not guarantee your safety.
  12. If you learn that a WiscAlerts-Text Messaging message was sent that you did not receive, it might be because you entered an incorrect number. Check to make sure that you entered the correct cell phone number. Once you have entered the number, be sure you receive a text message confirming that your number is enrolled.
  13. To obtain more information regarding a campus emergency, seek your local news media outlets. As information is available, it will also be posted on the UW Madison campus webpage at www.wisc.edu.
