UW Digital ID (Personal Certificate) - Installing My Certificate (Windows and Mac)
This document will guide you through installing your personal certificate on Windows and Mac.
After you've downloaded your certificate, open the .p12 file. The Certificate Import Wizard will open. Click Next.
Enter the password you specified when you downloaded your certificate. If your certificate was downloaded from Comodo directly, this is the PIN that you specified, NOT the pass-phrase. Ensure that your screen looks similar to the one below and click Next.
There are several options available on this screen when you install your certificate.
- Enable strong private key protection: Anytime you use your certificate (e.g. signing emails or documents), you will be prompted to enter your password. We recommend turning this option OFF.
- Mark this key as exportable: This will allow you to export your full certificate to successfully install onto your other devices. Without this option, if you were to lose your certificate and change computers, you would need to request your certificate again. We recommend turning this option ON.
- Include all extended properties: This will ensure that your certificate can properly work to digitally sign emails and documents. Without this option, you may still be able to properly sign and encrypt emails and documents, but you may encounter errors while doing so. We recommend turning this option ON.
Make sure that "Automatically select the certificate store" is selected. Click Next.
If you're encountering an error when installing your certificate, you'll likely need to specify the location to install the certificate. Please follow the instructions on this KB document: 42990
