SSL Certificate Service

Overview of Server Certificates

UW-Madison is a participant in the InCommon Certificate Service, which entitles campus staff to unlimited server (SSL) certificates at no cost to them. The InCommon certificate service is paid for by DoIT's Access Management Service Team and supported by UW Digital ID support team. In addition, DoIT offers personal digital certificates (UW Digital IDs) for signing and encrypting email, as well as certificate authentication. To learn more about personal digital certificates, visit UW Digital ID (Personal Certificate) - Product Overview.

GeoTrust certificates issued prior to November 2010 will continue to work. Customers can replace them with InCommon/Comodo certificates, before the GeoTrust certificate expires.

Please note, UW Digital ID can issue certificates for only those servers under the wisc.edu, wisconsin.edu, and uwsa.edu domain names. It is possible that UW Digital ID can issue certificates for other domains if UW Madison is the administrative manager for that domain. Please contact uwdigitalid@doit.wisc.eduto discuss. Alternatively, certificates can be purchased directly from Comodo or another commercial certificate authority.
