Cisco VoIP - Telephone options for shared spaces

This document lists options for those people who have to share on-campus space with another employee

Shared Space Phone Options

There are three main options that can be used for shared workspaces: Jabber, Extension Mobility, and Multiple Lines on a single phone. You can use more than one option. Please look through the descriptions of the items to find what would work best for you.

Jabber

Jabber is softphone option. You can talk on your phone through your computer using a headset. If you are using Jabber when you work from home, you can continue using it at the office.

Advantages

  1. You will have the same setup at work and home.
  2. Do not have to type your NetID into the phone using a number pad

Disadvantages

  1. Must remember to have your headset available.

Action needed to use this option:

Confirm with your IT staff that Jabber is installed on the computer you will be using. Request a Jabber account (if you do not have one already). Cisco VoIP Request Forms

Extension Mobility

Extension Mobility is a feature for Cisco phones that allows users to take their phone lines and device settings with them to Cisco phones across campus.

Advantages

  1. Can use any UW-Madison Cisco VoIP phone and have your information on it
  2. Do not need to remember the headset.

Disadvantages

  1. Entering your NetID into the phone using a number pad can be cumbersome.
  2. Only works for those in buildings with Cisco VoIP Telephones.

Action needed to use this option:

Multiple Lines on a single phone

The standard 7841 Cisco Phone has the capability to have 4 lines on it. If you are returning to the same shared space each time, this may be option. Each user could have their own line on a shared phone.

Advantages

  1. Do not have to log into the phone each time
  2. Do not have to remember to bring a headset

Disadvantages

  1. Only works for those returning to the same shared desk.
  2. Users may be distracted by incoming calls on the other lines of the phone.
  3. Limited number lines can be placed on the phone.
  4. Only works for those building with Cisco VoIP Telephones.

Action needed to use this option:

Talk to the person who manages the phones for your department. Ask them to request your line to be added to the phone near the workstation you will be using. If you are the person who manages the phones, please go to the Line Change Request. Cisco VoIP Request Forms
