Internet Recommendations for Remote Instruction

Remote instruction required internet connection speeds.

For instructors:

Due to the critical role that home internet service will provide throughout the pandemic, we recommend purchasing or upgrading to the fastest available internet service that you can obtain. While it will cost fractionally more, eliminating your own network speed as part of the problem does provide a starting point for eliminating issues. The student recommendations below can serve as a minimum for instructors as well.

For both Students and Faculty:

Ensure you’re within strong signal of your wireless access point- if there’s the possibility of using a wired network connection we strongly recommend you use that. Also note that you may be sharing the resource with roommates or other family members and plan accordingly. We recommend testing your bandwidth and signal during peak usage times (late morning or early afternoon and between 9 PM and 1 AM).

For students the minimum internet service recommended:

  • Make sure your router is relatively new, anything purchased in the past 4 years should be OK.  Things to look for are compliance with the Wifi 5 standard (802.11ac).
  • Use an ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to your router when possible.  While WiFi almost always works, ethernet is more reliable.
  • Download speed: the rate at which data is transferred from the internet to your device – higher numbers are better, but we recommend at least 15 megabits per second (Mbps)
  • Upload speed: the rate at which data is transferred from your device to the internet – higher numbers are better, but we recommend at least 5 Mbps
  • Ping: the delay in transferring data imposed by network conditions – lower numbers are better, but we recommend that your connection have no more that 75 milliseconds
If your internet doesn't meet the recommended minimums, it may still be OK.  However, it is advisable to at least think about alternative locations.  The Law School will have space for Law Students to attend online classes (with headphones) or to study with WiFi access.
