Law School Attendance Tracking Canvas Quiz Instructor Instructions
Basic steps on how to use the Law School's Attendance Tracking Canvas quiz
If you’ve opted in to use this tool, you’ll receive access to a shared Google Sheet containing your class roster and scheduled meeting days after the drop/add date (typically the second week of classes). This sheet will be updated nightly with attendance data based on student quiz submissions.
Before Class
We strongly recommend reminding your students to complete the Attendance Tracking Quiz at the start of each class. Students often forget! Students devices must be on UWNet or the Law wireless network in order to access the quiz.

New Feature: Access Code Protection
You can now choose to protect the attendance quiz with an access code that changes automatically after each class.
- The access code will appear in the title of an unpublished Canvas quiz.
- Keep this quiz unpublished.
- Share the new code with your students in class each day.
- You’ll need to check and share the updated code for every session.
How the Google Sheet Works
- The top row of the Google Sheet lists class dates.
- Each row corresponds to a student.
- When a student submits the quiz within 10 minutes before or after class time, the cell will turn green and be marked as Attended.
- If a student forgets to submit the quiz, you can manually enter a time within the class period to mark them as present.
- To mark an excused absence, enter a zero (0) in the cell — it will turn yellow.
- You can also add notes (e.g., “out sick”) in a cell. This will turn the cell white.
