What is an asset tag?
Asset tags are stickers with unique 6-digit numbers which are applied to all WCER equipment (also referred to as assets ).
All WCER equipment which is deployed to WCER users or locations is entered into the WCER Inventory system. Each asset is given a unique identifier within the inventory system which is called its "asset tag" or "asset number" and also its "WCER number". Research IT generates physical asset tags, which are just durable stickers, and applies them to the laptops, desktops, monitors, etc. which are deployed throughout the Center and its members.
There are two types of tags: white asset tags (with a QR Code) and the older red asset tag.
White Asset Tags
White asset tags are a bit larger than the red asset tags and measure 3 1/2 inches by 1/2 inches (89 mm x 18 mm). They also have a WCER Inventory logo and a QR Code printed on them.
This style has replaced the red asset tags for WCER laptops, desktops, and printers. Eventually these tags will be used on all new WCER deployed equipment.
Information Displayed on White Asset Tags
White Asset tags provide the following information:
- QR Code
- Contact Information - support@wcer.wisc.edu
- WCER Inventory logo
- Company - optional - (example: C: "WIDA")
- Asset Number (example: T: "405117")
- Serial - (example: S: "HV9L54HV9")
Red Asset Tags
Red asset tags are smaller than the white asset tags and measure 2 inches by 3/4 inches (51 mm x 19 mm). They have a bar code printed just above the 6-digit WCER number.
They are usually found on older laptops and desktop computers as well as most monitors, docks, and various other assets.
Red asset tags are tamperproof— they leave the words "VOID" on the surface of the asset if removed.
Information Displayed on Red Asset Tags
Red Asset tags provide the following information:
- Contact Information - Property of WCER - UW Madison support@wcer.wisc.edu
- Bar Code
- Asset Number (examples: 405117, 404019m)
- Company - WIDA assets will also display "C: WIDA" on white asset tags.
Location of Asset Tags
WCER asset tags are typically applied in the following places.
- Laptops
- On the corner of the hinge-side of the laptop's lid
- On the bottom of the laptop, near the printed information of the manufacturer
- On the corner of the hinge-side of the laptop's lid
- Desktops
- On the back or side
- On the back or side
- Tablets
- On the back
- Monitors
- On the back, in the upper left corner of the casing.
- On the back, in the upper left corner of the casing.
- Printers
- On the back or side
