Mapping WCER Drives
About
WCER has two file shares on the new system.
- wcer — For standard project and group data like that kept on the "N:" drive on the current file shares.
- wcer-restricted — For projects and groups that need secure file storage for FERPA and other restricted data types.
Following the Windows instructions below will map whichever of the new file shares you have access to on your SoE domain computer. Following the Mac instructions will mount the "wcer" drive on your macOS device.
Requirements
- Valid UW NetID
- Active connection to SoE domain
Your computer must be connected to the SoE domain before attempting to map or mount the drives. The two ways to ensure this are:- Be plugged-in physically with a network cable in the Education Sciences or Education buildings via a direct connection or a dock.
- Be connected with the GlobalProtect VPN client.
NOTE: If you are using a portable device like a laptop, it is recommended that you always be connected to the GlobalProtect VPN so that your device will not disconnect from shared drives when undocking or unplugging the network cable.
Windows Instructions
- Open File Explorer and select the N drive (SOEDFS \\ad.education.wisc.edu)
- Open the TempSpace folder, then look for a folder named Mount-WCER-Shared-Drives, open it and you should see the compressed folder named Mount-WCER-Drives.
- Select the compressed Mount-WCER-Drives folder, click the Copy button. (for Windows 10, right-click and choose Copy from the menu that appears)
- Right-click anywhere on the desktop background, then click on the Paste icon.
(for Windows 10, choose Paste from the right-click menu that appears) - You should now have a copy of the compressed Mount-WCER-Drives folder on your desktop. You may close the N drive window now.
- Right-click the compressed Mount-WCER-Drives folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All.. from the menu that appears.
Click on the Extract button to create the uncompressed Mount-WCER-Drives folder on your PC’s Desktop. - Open the uncompressed Mount-WCER-Drives folder and then right-click the Mount-WCER-Drives batch file and select Open from the menu.
- Click on More Info within the “Windows protected your PC” warning window. Then click on the Run anyway button.
- The PowerShell script will then prompt you for your NetID user name and password. Enter them, then press the OK button.
You should now have the “wcer” shared drive (S drive) mapped on this computer.
Unlike WCER’s current N drive, you will only be able to see the folders which you have access to within the “Projects” folder.
NOTE: The script will also attempt to mount the "wcer-restricted" (R:) drive, if you have access to it as well, with a "projects-restricted" folder located within.
