We are happy to announce the arrival of PHP 7 support for our LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)platform customers which brings substantial improvements to performance.

PHP 7 reduces memory consumption and the benchmarks for PHP 7 show speeds two or three times as fast as PHP 5.6.  As an example, a typical WordPress site will handle twice as many requests per second, which in practical terms will represent a 100% improvement on performance.

Much effort has been made to make this migration to this new major version as seamless as possible.  However, there are some backwards compatibility considerations, which primarily deal with removal of deprecated items.  Most all of these have been deprecated for some time and for more information about the changes please see: http://php.net/manual/en/migration70.php

The web hosting service is here to provide customers with a migration path to the most up to date platforms and frameworks supported by DoIT.  Every step of the way we will endeavor to ensure a successful migration for those on our older LAMP platforms and for those already on the newer servers but wish to upgrade to PHP 7.   No changes will be made to any sites without engagement and sign off from the contacts.

For those who would like to pursue an upgrade please contact us at: webhosting@doit.wisc.edu and we will reach out to discuss the best course of action for each customer.
