Web Hosting - Website Redirects

DoIT’s Web Hosting service offers a free service to all UW-Madison customers who need to redirect a URL or domain to a new location.

***We maintain redirects for a minimum of one year and can continue to host them indefinitely***

Here are the redirect options:

Option 1: Redirect all requests for myolddomain.wisc.edu to an informational page explaining that the site has a new URL and instructing users to update their bookmarks or links. We recommend creating a new page in the Knowledge Base (KB) to which we can redirect the site.

Option 2: Automatically redirect all requests for any pages within myolddomain.wisc.edu/* to the home page of mynewdomain.wisc.edu

  • For example, mynewdomain.wisc.edu/subsite/ or mynewdomain.wisc.edu/subsite/newpage.html

Option 3: Automatically redirect all requests for myolddomain.wisc.edu/* and match the relative path to the page at mynewdomain.wisc.edu/*.

  • For example, myolddomain.wisc.edu/subfolder/page.html will be redirected to mynewdomain.wisc.edu/subfolder/page.html.

Option 4: Customers who will require multiple redirects or future updates to redirects can request a free tier static HTML bronze account, and self-service redirects via an Apache .htaccess configuration file.

  •  Specific rules can be crafted the .htaccess file to guide traffic from old or temporary URLs to new destinations.
