Accessing Microsoft Azure OpenAI Services

How to Access Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI Services
  1. Obtain an Azure Subscription

If you have an existing Azure subscription, you can add the OpenAI service to this subscription.  (Note: Microsoft calls Azure accounts "subscriptions")

If you don’t have an Azure subscription, follow the instructions in Requesting an Azure Subscription and indicate in the notes field of the form that you will be accessing the Azure OpenAI Service.

  1. Access Azure OpenAI Services

By default, the OpenAI service available to you using your UW–Madison Azure subscription allows you limited access to Azure OpenAI Services; i.e., access with preset Content Filtering and Abuse Monitoring settings.

If your work requires modifying these settings, you will need to complete separate forms for content filters and/or abuse monitoring and get approval from Microsoft (usually takes about one week). These forms require the following information:

This is usually a long alphanumeric string, e.g., abcdef01-2345-6789-Oabc-def012345678, which you can find using Get subscription and tenant IDs in the Azure portal - Azure portal or in the “New Microsoft Azure account request” welcome email you received when your UW-Madison Azure subscription was provisioned.
