The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m.

The minutes of August 19 were approved.

General Reports

Albert Muniz, ASEC Chair, reported on the Wisconsin RISE Initiative Summit. The event included a plenary session led by campus leaders as well as three breakout sessions, covering one of the RISE focus areas: AI, EARTH, and THRIVE. Albert also shared at the Associated Students of Madison (ASM) reception, ASM leadership had an opportunity to meet and engage with university leadership.

Mallory Musolf, Secretary of the Academic Staff reported the ad hoc review committees on academic staff professorial titles each held their first meeting.

Liaison Reports

Alissa Ewer reported that the UW System shared governance meeting included an orientation to welcome new and returning representatives. An overview of the UW System administrative policy process was presented and the UW System interim policy on Institutional Statements was discussed.

Diane Stojanovich reported the University of Academic Planning Council approved proposals to establish MS and PhD degrees in Animal and Dairy Sciences, as well as a new PhD degree in Science Communication.

Provost: Thoughts on recently published rankings; Impressions on enrollment data; UW’s enrollment goals in the next 5 years; Campus’ approach to enrollment data for other student groups (e.g., graduate students, professional degree students, etc.)

OHR: Thoughts on proposed initiatives developed by ASEC’s professional development subcommittee; Update on CCF; Update on progress made on outstanding TTC issues; Position Cap and TTC impacts

Guest: Lori Reesor, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

With the recently published enrollment numbers of the freshman class, Lori discussed pressure points in terms of space needs and shared disappointment in the decrease of underrepresented students of color. This year’s Wisconsin Welcome events experienced continued increase in attendance. Lori credited increased communication and visibility of these events. The staff position supporting students impacted by war, violence and displacement was posted with the goal of having the hire in place by November. Supporting students and their health continues to be a priority. Lori stressed the importance of demystifying the notion that there is a delay in accessing mental health services for students. Same-day service is available for high-risk students, as well as a 24/7 crisis line. 

Guest: Beth Meyerand, Vice Provost for Faculty and Staff Affairs

Beth discussed her transition from the Vice Provost for Faculty and Staff Affairs (VPFSA) role and encouraged the continuation of strong partnership between the VPFSA and ASEC, including collaboration in organizing and leading the Academic Staff Chats program.
