DoIT Internal Operations - Access to Secure Locations

This document explains the process and procedures associated with requesting, receiving, assigning, and communicating access to secure locations within buildings occupied by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT).

Process Owners

As of June 2025, this process is owned by multiple groups within the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) and the Department of Computer Sciences.

DoIT Cybersecurity Operations

DoIT Cybersecurity Operations owns the process of receiving, assigning, and communicating access to secure locations associated with DoIT Cybersecurity spaces located in the basement of the Computer Sciences Building.

DoIT Data Center Team

The DoIT Data Center Team owns the process of receiving, assigning, and communicating access to secure locations associated with the DoIT Data Center located in the basement of the Computer Sciences Building.

CDIS Data Center Team

The CDIS IT Team owns the process of receiving, assigning, and communicating access to secure locations associated with the CDIS Data Center located in Unit 3 of the Computer Sciences Building.

Requesting Access

DoIT managers or supervisors will request access to secure locations on behalf of their team members.

Within the request they will share:

  • The first and last name of the staff member
  • The first 6 digits on the back (under magnetic stripe) of the staff member’s Wiscard
  • The secure location(s) they need access to
  • A start and end date if applicable

Requests will be made in writing by emailing:

  • allen.monette@wisc.edu and bridget.bartell@wisc.edu - For access to doors and rooms associated with DoIT Cybersecurity Operations in the basement of the Computer Sciences Building (Room B214) and in Rust-Schreiner Hall (Room 109).
  • dcteam@doit.wisc.edu - For access to doors and rooms associated with the DoIT Data Center (Rooms B332-B380) located in the basement of the Computer Sciences Building.
  • internal-operations-team@office365.wisc.edu - For access to doors and rooms associated with Rust-Schreiner Hall (exterior building doors) and the Middleton Building (3rd floor access).
  • william.foster@wisc.edu or gary.northey@wisc.edu - For access to doors and rooms associated with Network Services (Rooms B217, B221, and B263) in the basement of the Computer Sciences Building.
  • lab@cs.wisc.edu - For access to doors and rooms associated with the CDIS Data Center (Room B240) located in Unit 3 of the Computer Sciences Building.

Campus vendors or contractors may contact the UW-Madison Police Department (UWPD) Access Control Office directly requesting access to secure locations based on work they need to do in a building. In these cases, UWPD Access Control will email the Building Contact to confirm if access can be granted and who will add access.

Based on the request, the Building Contact will include the appropriate process owner when replying to UWPD Access Control, so access can be received, reviewed, and confirmed in a timely fashion.

Assigning Access

Upon receiving a request for access, the process owner will log into the Non-UWPD Lenel Web Client to add access levels to a Wiscard holder.

The process owner will communicate with the requester, confirming that access has been granted and that the cardholder should now be able to access the secure location(s) within buildings occupied by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT).

Non-Wiscard or Visitor Badges

Reactivate a Disabled Badge

To reactivate a non-Wiscard or visitor badge, email access@uwpd.wisc.edu and provide the first and last name, along with the number on the back lower right corner of the badge.

Request a Non-Wiscard Badge

To request a Non-Wiscard badge for a new contractor, vendor, or visitor email access@uwpd.wisc.edu and provide the following information:
  • First and last name
  • Position (If applicable)
  • Company name
  • Badge photo (See Photo Requirements below)
  • Access Needed

Contractor, vendor, or visitor badges will printed and should be picked up by the contractor, vendor, or visitor at the UW-Madison Police Department Access Control Office located at 1433 Monroe Street, Madison, WI 53711.

Photo Requirements

  • Color photo taken within the last six months 
  • Plain, light-colored background 
  • Proper lightning with no shadows
  • Subject’s face is straight at the camera with eyes open   
  • Photo is taken from the shoulders to above the top of the head   
  • Subject is not wearing sunglasses or a hat
Photos can be taken at the UW-Madison Police Department Access Control Office located at 1433 Monroe Street, Madison, WI 53711 from 8:30 AM - 3:45 PM Monday-Friday.
