Wordpress CDN & Caching options

Things to consider before customer usage

DoIT Web Hosting offers two different options for caching WordPress sites. First, we offer a Cloudfront CDN option. With that option we will create a Cloudfront CDN for use with your WordPress site and you will use the W3 Total Cache plugin to manage the static asset file delivery to the Cloudfront CDN. We have a how to KB to configure the plugin.

The other option is using a Varnish cache configured with your WordPress site. We would setup your site to work with Varnish, which would create cached copies of all website pages and deliver them without the web server rendering the page. This provides a lot of the same benefits as of using a CDN, but happens on the web server layer. There is also a plugin that would need to be installed if you wanted to interact with the cache in a way to remove cached pages when there were updates. Otherwise each page is cached for 1 hour and all static assets (.js,.css,.html, etc.) are cached for 24 hours.

How to choose between the two?

If your application needs a presence around the world "On the Edge" you will likely have the best experience with a Cloudfront CDN. Cloudfront will ensure that if a user requests your site from say Europe, Cloudfront will deliver your site's static assets from Europe. See our CDN plugin support KB.

If this is less of a concern for you and you just seek to have the benefits of increased page load speed, Varnish would be our first recommendation. As users navigate your site, Varnish will build a page cache of pages and the server will send cached pages to your users. When it's time to edit a page, we recommend a WordPress plugin to interact with your page cache to remove pages that were just edited. See our KB about managing the Varnish cache with a plugin.

Let us know if you need help deciding or you have general questions.
