UW-Madison - IT Policy - Cloud Services

Policies that affect the use of cloud services help you stay on the right side of laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

UW-Madison doesn't have a unified policy on cloud services. Instead, we have the Non-UW-Madison Applications and Services Guidelines. The Guidelines describe the range of issues to consider when choosing a cloud service.

UW-Madison also has several policies that are relevant when UW-Madison data is stored or processed on cloud services. When a policy is about using or protecting university data, the policy applies no matter where that data is used or stored. Some policies specifically mention cloud services, but if not, the same or equivalent protections still apply no matter who owns or operates the service. Selecting an appropriate cloud service is important because some of the protections can only be provided by the cloud service.
