Canvas - Defining Cross-listing and Merging [UW-Madison]
Officially Cross-listed Courses
The first definition of cross-listing is used to describe one way the Registrar’s Office offers combined sections in the course catalog: SIS - Combined Sections: Types and Definitions
-
-
This term describes an official process where students register for courses that are listed across multiple subjects or departments. These are referred to as cross-listed or meets-with courses.
-
Canvas automatically creates these course pages as cross-listed sections.
-
For more details about how these are imported, see Crosslisted and meets-with course combinations, in the KB document Canvas - How Automated Course and Section Creation Works [UW-Madison]

Cross-listing in Canvas, aka Merging
The other definition of cross-listing, also known as merging, is only used in Canvas.
-
-
It describes the manual process of moving an enrollment section from one Canvas course shell into another. Often, this results in one course shell being used by multiple courses or course sections.
-
Canvas describes this process as cross-listing, and this is the term that appears on-screen. Administrators cannot change these labels, so we use both terms, crosslisting and merging, to describe this process at UW-Madison. For example, the button below appears when viewing enrollment sections in Canvas.
-
Always be sure to review Canvas - Pedagogical Reasons for Cross-listing (UW-Madison) before manually crosslisting a course.
