Chaz - TAM Sales Software

This document outlines how to install TAM software for Chazen.

Tam office/cash Register .net is used by the Chazen gift shop it does not process any PCI data it is only used for inventory and sales tracking both computers are in the shop.  TAM's data is stored in a sql database hosted on chaz-re-tam.doit.wisc.edu

Vendor website: https://tamretail.com

Helpdesk: (866) 435-7826

Used only by the Chazen gift shop

Procedure

Most issues can be resolved by rebooting Chaz-RE-TAM.  You'll have to schedule this with Chazen staff as Chaz-RE-TAM is also hosting "Raisers Edge" and may be being used during the day.  Cash register machines will run in "offline mode" so rebooting immediately is not normally necessary.

All other documentation is in a binder in the gift shop.

Installation Notes

  • All TAM customers, including the Chazen gift shop, have access to unlimited customer support from TAM. Use it! The up to date contact information can be found on TAM's website.
  • When you call TAM, you will speak to an agent that only creates a new case then hands it off to an actual technician that will call you back later. This can take a few hours, so call them and put that case in right away if you want to get things done the same day.
  • If you borked the installation and tried to configure it yourself, you probably didn't get far. Now when you open up TAM it probably tells you to contact your IT administrator or gives you some other warning/error message and won't even let you start it. Now you need to go back to C:\ProgramData\TAMRetail, delete the XML file there, and add the magical XML file that you should have copied by now from another working computer. It will now re-prompt for the key, skip the setup, and you should be good to go. Otherwise you can just delete the XML file and and attempt to configure it yourself again. You will fail, but it is an option.

Installation

Step one: Acquire installation media and product key:

Correct version and key as of Feb 2019 can be found here: \\rads-storage.ad.wisc.edu\rads-storage\Windows Software\TAM

  1. Acquire the serial number for the TAM software in the gift shop. They should have this information on file.
  2. Acquire the version number of the TAM software in the gift shop - Believe it or not TAM support knows absolutely nothing other than you actually own their software from the serial number.
  3. The Chazen has installation media in the form of a disk, but it is corrupt. Call TAM support and explain the situation. They will send you new TAM files matching the version of TAM that the gift shop has. The will also send you a product key to activate it. You will need this key first thing when you run the installation application.

TAM settings, including database credentials and server to connect to, are configured entirely through a hidden XML file located in C:\ProgramData\TAMRetail. In order to see this file, you will have to enable seeing hidden files and folders in windows. When TAM is being installed, it automatically creates this XML file using the parameters that you provide it ie. server name, sql username, password etc. DO NOT try to configure it yourself, you will fail. Instead follow the steps below.

Step two: Install TAM

  1. If you ignored my previous warning about configuring TAM yourself, see the note on what to do if you borked the installation.
  2. Find a working computer that's running TAM. There should be two of them, one in the gift shop manager's office and another one in the actual gift shop.
  3. Copy that magical XML file found at C:\ProgramData\TAMRetail.
  4. Put that guy in the same location on the computer that you're trying to install TAM on. If no such location exists, run the installation media once, and then intentionally fail at finishing the installation. That should be enough to make sure the file is there.
    1. Copy the XML file into the appropriate place if you do this.
  5. Run the installation application, and give it the product key.
  6. TAM should then skip all of the manual configuration parts and just open.

If you've managed to get to the main TAM screen with the big buttons and a logon prompt, then you're doing well, but you're not done. Testing time.

Step 3: Test TAM

  1. Have someone with login credentials log in.
  2. Try and perform some TAM operations like printing a receipt or using the various buttons.
  3. If you experience some kind of program crash with an exception being thrown, fear not! It is not as scary as it looks. Each TAM version requires some specific version of the .net framework. If you look closely at the error message, it will tell you what's missing.
  4. Use google and install the missing version of the .net framework from Microsoft directly.
  5. Log back into TAM and try testing again. Things should be operational now.
    1. If TAM is still crashing, it is most likely that you installed the wrong framework. Double check your work and try again.
    2. If it's still crashing, TAM customer support is good to contact. Check out the notes on TAM support in the installation notes section, be sure to make a case with them early!
