Send to IRB Member Activity during Pre-Review

This section provides information about using the Send to IRB Member activity.

This activity may be used by analysts during pre-review of an expedited change or initial review in order to obtain consultation on whether or not the submission actually qualifies for expedited review, or to obtain clinical or some other relevant member expertise prior to approval of the submission. In rare cases, this activity may be used for exempt submissions.  When sending to an IRB member, analysts must designate the selected reviewer as either a consultant, or designated reviewer.  See green box, below.

Consultant: Select consultant when using the activity to confirm that the submission meets criteria for expedited review or to obtain member expertise on a specific component of the submission.

Designated Reviewer: Select designated reviewer when the member is reviewing the entire submission and will be serving as the expedited reviewer. This is most often used when the submission involves interaction with prisoners. In these cases, the IRB prisoner representative must serve as the designated reviewer. See Prisoners for additional information.
