WiscWeb - WordPress UW Theme - Adding A Custom Google Search To Your Site

WordPress sites have the ability to add a custom search engine to their site. This document will walk you through the process of creating a Custom Google search engine and adding it to your site.

The process for using Google Custom Search Engine has changed due to a change in the process by Google itself. 

To request a Google Custom Search Engine ID, please fill out the form at You may need to access this form in a private browsing window. You will be contacted with information for your site's Search Engine ID. Once you have your Search Engine ID, please follow the steps below to apply your ID.

  1. Log into your WordPress site dashboard, and either click the Customize Your Site button or hover your mouse over the Appearance menu on the left and choose Customize.

  2. In the left menu, click Search Options. In the next screen, click the check box for "Use search on this site." When you have that clicked, you can then enter your Search Engine ID value in the field, and click Save & Publish.

Removal of Ads

Google Custom Search requests are typically handled within 1-2 business days and the option to disable ads is completed 3 business days after the account is created. The Google Apps team will notify you when the account is ready.
