WiscWeb - WordPress UW Theme - Events Calendar Pro Google Map Rendering Options
This document will walk you through two options for fixing the Events Calendar Pro Google Map rendering issue that results in a "Oops! Something went wrong" message.
Option 1: Turn Off Maps in the Events Calendar Pro Settings
The quickest and easiest fix for this issue would be to simply turn off the option to see an embedded map in your events.
To do so, please follow these steps:
- In your Dashboard, navigate to Events
- Click on Settings
- In the General tab, scroll down to the Map Settings area
- Uncheck the box that says "Check to enable map for events and venues"
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the blue Save Changes button
If it is important that your users be able to see the Google Map in your events, you can obtain an API Key from Google. When added to your Events Calendar Pro settings, this will allow your events to render the maps as expected.
To do so, please follow these steps:
- Open an incognito or private browsing window for your browser
- Navigate to the Google Cloud Platform Console (copy and paste this link into your browser): https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/
- Sign in with a departmental service account (this is so that the account is not tied to a particular person, in case the person leaves the University). It should be the same account you use for Google Custom Search and/or Google Analytics
- Click on the blue Get Started button
- In the modal window, select the Maps checkbox (or check all three, if you prefer)
- Click on the blue Continue button
- Select your project from the dropdown and click Next
- You will see a modal window that says "Enable billing for project "projectname"." Click Create Billing Account
- Agree to the Terms of Service and add your departmental/business info to the account (including a valid credit card) and select Start My Free Trial
- In the window that says "Enable Google Maps Platform," click Next to enable your APIs
- Your new API key should display in the next pop-up window. Copy the key and navigate back to WiscWeb
- From your WiscWeb Dashboard, select Events
- Click Settings
- Choose the APIs tab
- Paste the key into the Google Maps API Key field
- Click the blue Save Changes button
