Tech - How to Add WPM Printers
You must be connected to VPN (GlobalProtect) to print via the Campus Wifi networks.
Requirements
WPM Printers are available when plugged in to internal network, connected the WPR/PBS Wisconsin engineering networks, or any other network via VPN (GlobalProtect).
Add a Printer
Naming Scheme
All printers are named WPMPR-[room number]-[type].
The “type” can be:
- Color
- BW
- MFP (multi-function printer, meaning it also has a scanner or fax)
- Copier (reserved for large floor standing copiers that also have print functionality)
They also have more helpful information in the location field, with a department name or other description.
See screenshots (Mac and PC) below:
Windows
All printers that are in public spaces should be automatically installed on your machine. They will all be named with the WPMPR- naming scheme.
Note: Old copies of printers that do not match this naming scheme will likely no longer work and can be removed. If you need assistance with this, let WPM IT know.
To add a printer that was not automatically installed, double click the "Add a WPM Printer" icon on your desktop, the double click the printer you would like to install. The printer will then be usable from any application on your computer.
Mac
Printers are not automatically installed, but are automatically made available. You will need to pick the printer(s) that you use with the instructions below.
Note: the WPM Network status in the WPM menu bar icon must be green in order to install or print to printers.
- Navigate to the Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners.
- Remove any existing WPM printers.
- Click the + Button and pick the printer(s) that you would like. They will automatically select the correct drivers.
Note: Some older printers require some extra steps to get working. If any printer you need is not showing up in the list, please contact WPM IT.
iPad
Your iPad needs to be managed by WPM IT and be connected to VPN (GlobalProtect) to print. Beyond that, no additional configuration is needed. Just tap the print button in your application and you should be given a list of all printers that support iPads.
Advanced / Engineering Info
If your machine is not managed by WPM IT and you would like to print directly to it, you can manually add it with the DNS name for the printer, [name].int.wpm.wisc.edu. Please do not add the printers via IP address. Printers are all on their own separate campus VLAN and will have addresses in the 10.128.218.128/26 range.
