Printing - Add a Network Printer (macOS)

Instructions for mapping a network printer on your Mac.
  1. Launch System Preferences/Printers and Scanners and click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... button
  2. Press the Control key and click in the blank space on the menu bar and choose Customize Toolbar
  3. Drag the Advanced tab from the options palette to the toolbar next to Windows. Then click Done.
  4. Next, click the toolbar’s new Advanced icon then set Type as Windows Printer via Spoolss
  5. Populate the URL field with the FQDN of the printer you are trying to connect to

      WSB_Secure*
      smb://print.wsb.wisc.edu/wsb_secure
      Departmental Printers
      smb://print.wsb.wisc.edu/<printer name>


  6. Populate the Name field with name of your departmental printer or "WSB_Secure"
  7. From the Use drop down bar, choose the proper print driver for the printer you are connecting to
    1. For WSB_Secure, choose Select Software, and then select the [Link for document 153537 is unavailable at this time]
    2. For Departmental Printers, use the Generic PCL Printer driver. If you run into issues, contact ITS Support for assistance
      1. If the printer you are adding supports double-sided printing (duplexing) enable the Duplexer option
    3. You've now added the printer to your Mac
  8. When you print a document you will be prompted for credentials to authenticate to the print server
    1. Choose Connect as Registered User
    2. Enter your NetID credentials, but prepend "AD\" before your NetID in the Name field

    To avoid needing to enter your NetID credentials every time you need to print, check the Remember this password in my keychain box. Note that if your NetID password changes, or your enter your credentials incorrectly, you will need to remove them from your Mac's keychain.

  9. If you authenticated properly, your job will be processed by the network printer

  10. Optional: Spool a test print job from your Mac

    1. On the Printers System Preferences page, click the button to open the Printer Queue...

    2. Then click Print Test Page from the Printer menu
