Navigating through OneNote for Windows 10:

Organizing your notes

Depending on how often you use OneNote or how you organize your notes in general, OneNote's system may be extremely intuitive or it may seem like it has too many bells and whistles for simple note-taking. Regardless of prior experience, this is a one-stop shop on how to navigate OneNote's interface.

Notebooks are organized in a system replicating physical notebooks:

  • Notebook
    • Section Tab
      • Page

OneNote menu

This is the top navigationbar of OneNote. It keeps with the tradition and design of other programs in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Home tab

The very top left button is the Back button and it sends you to the previous page. The button to the right of that is the Undo (CTRL+Z) and it returns the document to the immediately previous state it was in prior to the changes that were made. The button on the very right is a Customization Drop-Down Menu that lets you add/remove the buttons that appear on this bar.

The File, Home, Insert, Draw, History, Review, and View buttons each open different menus that are generally filled with features and tools that correspond to their title, save for the Home tab which hosts as a hub for the most commonly used features.

The File section leads to a menu where one can save, share, or export their notebook  as they desire, or open others as well.
The Insert tab is fairly self-explanatory in that if you need to put a video, picture, table, equations, or any other odds and ends you can find it here.
In the Draw section, the tools that will be used the most with the surface's pen tool can be found here. Highlighter, pen, and shape tools reside here and are plentiful.
The History tab opens up options that are associated with previous versions of the Notebook or page, like reverting to a previous version or looking at past edits if it is a group's notebook.
Review allows for notebook protection, spelling, and language tools.
The View area changes how things are seen on the device, like zooming in or out, adding lines, page color, separate windows, etc.

Section Tabs

These are the tabs the in the Notebook. The section color schemes match the page tabs on the side within that section. Colors can be changed by right-clicking and selecting them from the Section Color menu item.

The Plus Tab on the very right of the rest of the tabs adds a new tab at the end, and that new tab can be moved around by clicking and holding the left-mouse button and moving it side-to-side.

Right-clicking the tab bar will show a feature titled New Section Group which essentially creates a folder for section tabs.  Existing tabs can be added to it by left-clicking and dragging the tab into the section group.

You can rename sections by double clicking the name or right-clicking and selecting Rename.

Notebook
This button which is left of the section tabs lets you switch between other notebooks you may have and open/close them as you choose. Fairly simple, really.
