OS Compatibility Testing - M1 Macs

This document details the results of Departmental Support's software compatibility testing with M1 macs.

Overview

All applications were tested on an M1 mac with macOS 11.2.3.  Tests completed on 3/23/21.

Recommendation

DoIT Support recommends that M1 macs are able to be supported if the needs of the user are not impacted by the few apps that are not yet supported.

UPDATE 12/1/2020: The release of Apple's new M1 Macs, which only ship with Big Sur, has introduced an additional level of complexity in evaluating compatibility with Mac applications.  While some applications may work with Big Sur on Intel Macs, they may not with Big Sur on M1 Macs.  Bootcamp is also unavailable on M1 Macs and no Windows virtualization software (Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox; etc) are currently compatible with M1 Macs.  DoIT recommends carefully evaluating your software requirements and checking compatibility for all of your required applications before upgrading to Big Sur and/or investing in an M1 Mac.
