The Summer Collegiate Experience (SCE) is a high-impact, quality-learning, first-year experience for students entering the university. This KB explains procedures related to L&S departments with courses in the program.

Objectives of SCE

To provide a residential summer program that offers

  • A validating, safe, and inclusive environment that nurtures academic and personal growth
  • A foundation to build a strong network among peers, faculty, and staff
  • An opportunity to earn degree credits from a variety of UW courses

Courses Selected for SCE

Courses are listed on the SCE website. The SCE Program identified courses because:

  • they represent a cross-section of different majors and areas of study
  • they fulfill varied general education requirements
  • they are common and popular among first-year students
  • they reflect the academic interests of past SCE cohorts

Scheduling

SCE courses should have the following details for summer 2024:

  • Session is EFF. Summer 2024 dates: Monday, June 24 – Friday, August 2.
  • Choose 047 as Section (lecture) number
  • Set enrollments at 0 (restrict) in order to restrict enrollment to SCE students
  • SCE Classes are taught within two time blocks, AM (9 - noon) and PM (1 - 3:30 pm). SCE staff will work with instructors/departments to find a class time that best fits the instructor’s and SCE program schedules.

Staffing & Funding

In addition to the main instructor, each course may assign one TA. If your needs are different, please contact Nichlos Ewoldt.

  • Instructors and TAs appointments will be 64.5% for seven weeks (one week of prep + six weeks of the course, following standard summer appointment levels).
  • If we don’t have a TA workload for this iteration of the course, you will be asked to provide one.
  • Instructor and TA appointment details will be included on the Expense Details report.
  • SCE courses are not part of the Summer Budget Model; there is no cost or additional revenue to the department. Instructors and TAs are funded by 131-2 A480393.
