Canvas - Uploading a SCORM Package

This document discusses the process for adding a SCORM package to Canvas. It is meant for course designers working with noncredit Canvas courses.

Step 1: Activate the SCORM feature

For any SCORM package (either from Articulate Storyline or Articulate Rise), make sure that the SCORM feature is active and visible to you in the Canvas course navigation bar on the left.

If you do not see the SCORM link:

  1. Go to Settings and select the Navigation tab.

  2. Locate the SCORM item and move it to the top section.
Find SCORM in your list of settings

  3. Go down to the bottom of the page and select the Save button to save your changes.

Step 2: Upload a SCORM package

  1. Select the SCORM link in the navigation bar.
    select SCORM

  2. Select the Upload button.
    Select the upload button

  3. Choose your exported .zip file from your desktop.

    1. Please refer to Articulate 360 - Publishing to Canvas LMS to learn how to export your SCORM package from Articulate 360.

  4. Set the import type to Import as Graded Assignment.

  5. Select the Go button.

Step 3: Edit Assignment Settings

  1. Locate your uploaded SCORM assignment by selecting the Assignments link in the navigation bar.

  2. Select the assignment to open it.

  3. Select the Edit Assignment Settings button
    Select_Assignment_settings

  4. Add instructional context as needed.

  5. Adjust the Points and Display Grade options as desired.

  6. Under Submission Type, the External Tool should be selected and the link to your SCORM file should automatically be available.

  7. Check the box for Load This Tool In A New Tab.

    • This will enable the SCORM package to load in a new web browser tab to allow for optimal learner engagement. If this option is not selected, then the package will appear directly within Canvas and be restricted by Canvas parameters.

Step 4: Add the Assignment (and other course content) to Modules and Set Requirements

  1. Just like any other assignment, add the SCORM assignment to Modules.

  2. You can also add additional course content, such as pages before and after the assignment as well as a survey and/or a quiz.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Did you drag and drop the SCORM file into Canvas?

    • Try the Upload option.

  • For Storyline specifically, did you pull the SCORM package from email or cloud storage?

  • Sometimes, SCORM packages inexplicably become corrupted during export. Delete your current SCORM package from its location on your computer; and re-export the SCORM package. (Follow the instructions listed in KB #137065: Articulate 360 - Publishing to Canvas LMS for Storyline 360).
