Groups in Slate
What are Grad Coord Groups?
Grad Coord Groups are an optional tool for organizing your program's applications in Slate, which can facilitate your program's application review process.
Note that these groups do not perform any actions in Slate. For example, adding an application to the "Deny (G90)" Decision group does not deny the application. Think of these groups as simple labels, which can be used to cluster your applications in queries and views.
While any Slate user reviewing an application can see an application's groups, only Slate users with Graduate Coordinator permissions can edit an application's groups.
How do I add an application to a group?
You can edit an application's groups by filling out the GS Add/Update Grad Coord Groups form, which can be accessed while on the Application Tab or while reviewing the application in the Reader.
On the Application Tab
- Search for an applicant in Slate and select the Application Tab
- Select the Add/Update Grad Coord Groups link (see screenshot below)
- In the GS Add/Update Grad Coord Groups form that appears, select which group(s) you want to add the application to.

You can return to this form anytime to edit the groups. To remove an application from a group deselect it and/or choose "None" as your group.

How do I view an application's groups?
There are several places where you can view an application's groups in Slate.
Application Tab
On the Application Tab, you will see any groups assigned to an applicant under the Add/Update Grad Coord Groups link, as shown in the screenshot below.
Reviewing an Application in the Reader
While reviewing the application in the Reader, by selecting the applicant's name in the top left-hand corner, the drop down panel will list the application's groups, as shown in the screenshot below.
You can also view an applicant's groups by navigating to the GC Groups section in the application, which will list any groups that have been added, as shown in the screenshow below.
Using Custom Views in the Reader
Applicants' groups can be populated in the Reader if you wish to use them by creating custom views. To learn more about how to build and Custom Views, see the Customize Views / Columns (View Builder) in the Reader.
In the example custom view in the screenshot below, you can see that a view has been configured to show columns that will show an applicant's Decision Group, Communication Group, Color Group, and Grad Coord Comment.
Homepage Queries
In the Homepage Queries, Groups have been added as columns of data, as shown in the screenshot below.

What is the Grad Coord Comments section of the form?
The Grad Coord Comments field is a specific place for Graduate Coordinators to add/edit comments for processing purposes. Unlike the comments that can be added and updated by anyone reviewing an application in Slate, these Grad Coord Comments are only accessible to those with Graduate Coordinator permissions, and therefore can be used more reliably/safely in the coordinating of your program's application review.
Like application comments, these Grad Coord Comments can be viewed in queries and in custom views in the Reader.
