Denodo: Connect Tableau Desktop to Denodo

Tableau is a popular reporting software at UW Madison. In order to connect Tableau Desktop software to the campus Denodo virtual databases, the following steps will be required.

This article is meant to help Tableau developers using Tableau Desktop who wish to use Denodo as a data source.

Summary and Requirements

It is important to note that access to Denodo does not provide access to any data domains, only the tool.
Users must request access to at least one data domain in order to access any content within Denodo.

  • Must be connected to VPN or Campus Network
  • If you do not have access to the required folders, you may need to work with your helpdesk to install the connector

NOTE: The ability to deploy Denodo sourced workbooks to Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop will be rolled out in the near future and will be announced to all Denodo users when available.

Denodo Driver Files

The Denodo driver files for Tableau need to be downloaded and installed on your local computer in the My Tableau Repository folder in the Documents directory.

Downloads for the most recent Tableau connector files and instructions on installation are found here.

Set Up Data Source

Once the two configuration steps are complete, Tableau Desktop will be able to connect to the UW Denodo resources.
Here is a step-by-step guide for connecting to the resources.

  1. Open Tableau Desktop software.
  2. On the left column, there is a section for connecting to a server. Select Denodo JDBC by Denodo Technologies.
    1. If you don’t see correct Denodo option, click on the More... option and search for Denodo.
