Web Browsers - Disabling Java Plug-in

This document describes how to disable the Java add-on in your browser.

Chrome

  1. Click on Customize and control Google Chrome, (the icon with three stacked horizontal lines) then click settings.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of Settings, and click Show advanced Settings.
  3. Under the Privacy section, click Content Settings.
  4. In the Plug-ins section, click Disable individual plug-ins.
  5. If Java is installed, there should be an item called Java(TM) Platform SE...
  6. To disable the add-on, click the Disable link. You can re-enable Java at any time by returning to plugins and clicking Enable.

Firefox (Windows)

  1. Click Ctrl+Shift+A to access the Add-ons menu.
  2. On the left side menu, click plugins.
  3. If Java is installed, there should be an item called Java(TM) Platform SE.
  4. To disable the add-on, click the dropdown menu and select Never Activate. You can re-enable Java at any time by returning to plugins and selecting either Ask to Activate (recommended) or Always Activate.

Internet Explorer (Windows)

  1. Select Manage Add-ons from the tools menu.
  2. Scroll down to Java(TM) Plugin SSV Helper and click disable.
  3. You can re-enable Java any time by going back to this screen and clicking enable.

Firefox (Mac)

  1. From the Tools menu, click Add-ons
  2. On the left side menu, click plugins.
  3. If Java is installed, there should be an item called Java(TM) Platform SE.
  4. To disable the add-on, click the dropdown menu and select Never Activate. You can re-enable Java at any time by returning to plugins and selecting either Ask to Activate (recommended) or Always Activate.

Safari (Mac)

  1. From the Safari menu, click preferences.
  2. In the Security section, click Manage Website Settings.
  3. From the list of plug-ins on the left, select Java
  4. To disable Java on all websites, delete any sites listed under Configured Websites and change the When visiting other websites dropdown to block. If you would like to re-enable Java, go back to this drop down and select Ask.
