NetID - Modifying your Account

This document provides a step-by-step walk-through for modifying your NetID account. The account modification tool allows you to activate missing services, reset your password, add a recovery email address, and change your account recovery questions.

To begin, log into the NetID Account Modification tool at https://www.mynetid.wisc.edu/modify.

Choose the action you would like to perform:


Activate Services

This section allows you Activate Services that you are missing, but are eligible for. You may be missing services because you changed your status at UW-Madison (for example, but not limited to: from an applicant to a full student, a student to an employee, or from a hospital employee to a TA or teaching position). When this happens, the central services for which you are eligible may change.

Click the Activate Services button:

After activating services there will be a green banner at the top of your screen confirming the services activated:

Reset NetID Password

This section allows you to change your password. Prior to changing your password, you will be required to Add a Recovery Email address if you have not done so already.

Click the Change Password button:

This will bring you to the following page. Once you have entered your new password twice, click the Set Password button at the bottom of the page to save the changes. If you have forgotten your password, follow the instructions in NetID Account Recovery (Password Reset).

Once you have set your new password, you'll be sent back to the NetID Modification tool with a green success banner:

You will also receive an email to your inbox to indicate that your password has been changed:

Add/Change Recovery Email

This section allows you to Add or Change your Recovery Email Address, used to restore access to your account if you forget your NetID or password. Once you have set your recovery email address, click the Modify Account button at the bottom of the page to save the changes.

Note: Any recovery email address can only belong to a single NetID. You will be unable to set a recovery email address that is already set as the recovery address of a different NetID.

Click the Set Recovery Email button:

Enter the email address you wish to use and click Next.

Important: Your recovery email address may not be a UW Madison (@wisc.edu or @<dept>.wisc.edu) email address. Valid email addresses include @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @hotmail.com, etc. Additionally, a recovery email address can only belong to a single NetID. You will be unable to set a recovery email address that is already set as the recovery address of a different NetID.

An email with a recovery code will be sent to the inbox of the recovery email address you submitted with subject NetID Account Recovery Code sent from NetID Administration <help@doit.wisc.edu>:

Enter the 6-digit code in the Recovery Code box and click Next.

After successfully confirmed your recovery email with the recovery code you'll be sent back to the NetID Modification tool with a green success banner:

Change Account Recovery Questions

This section allows you to Add, Change, or Delete Questions for account recovery purposes. Once you have changed your account recovery questions, click the Modify Account button at the bottom of the page to save the changes.

Scroll down and click the Set Recovery Questions button:

You will be directed to this page:

This section allows you to delete existing questions and/or add new questions for account recovery purposes. Once you have modified your questions and answered them, click the Save my answers button on the page to save the changes.

    1. Note: Answers are not case sensitive.
    2. It is recommended that once a year you update your NetID Password Recovery Questions.

After successfully changing your recovery questions you'll be sent back to the NetID Modification tool with a green success banner:

You will also receive an email confirming that you have changed your recovery questions
