CCI Private Cloud - Distributed Datacenter Network (DDN) Overview

This document describes the process for adding a DDN to CCI Virtualization.

Customers may want to migrate a portion of their server infrastructure to CCI Virtualization. To facilitate this migration, a Distributed Datacenter Network (DDN) needs to be deployed to the customer site. DDN allows customers to have their server networks (subnet, VLAN) exist in both the customer's existing server locations and also within the CCI Virtualization environment.

An additional benefit of DDN is that network load balancing services can be provided between servers on a Distributed Datacenter Network.

Network Requirements for CCI

All networks in CCI must be DDN networks so they have access to the campus datacenter routing and firewalls.

The Distributed Datacenter Network (DDN) is a system of spine and leaf switches that provide edge connectivity for customer servers and provides access to the campus datacenter routing and firewalls.

There are two options if the customer networks are not DDN:

  1. Migrate the customer network to DDN before the servers are migrated to CCI.
    • This option is usually preferred, but it may require new DDN switches and an outage window to migrate the network and all its connected servers over.
  2. Re-IP the individual servers to DDN networks after they are migrated to CCI.
    • This usually involves additional work, such as updating DNS records, modifying firewall rules, adjusting load balancers, replacing certificates, updating database connection strings, and so on.

Here are the DDN network migration requirements:

  • Separate clients and servers
    • Only server networks will be migrated to DDN.
    • If servers and clients coexist in the same subnet, the clients must be moved to a different subnet.
  • No partial migrations
    • The entire network must be migrated to DDN at one time.
  • Determine VLAN IDs
    • The existing VLAN IDs may be available on DDN, but if they are not, new VLAN IDs will be assigned.
  • Physical access to DDN switch ports
    • All physical server connections must have access to a DDN switch port. This can be accomplished through one of two ways:
      1. Deploy new DDN switches (near the servers) with fiber connectivity back to a DDN spine switch.
      2. Physically move all the servers to a location with open DDN switch ports.
  • An outage window
    • The network migration will require a maintenance window and will result in an outage while physical server connections are moved, and routing changes are applied.

To request a DDN be added to the CCI Virtualization environment, email cci-virtualization@wisc.edu with your request.

Incident Reporting & Technical Support

CCI Private Cloud Incident Reporting

  • Customers should contact the DoIT Help Desk to report an incident or check the outages page for an CCI Private Cloud incident.
  • Formal support is provided for CCI Private Cloud during business hours only. After-hours support is best effort.

CCI Private Cloud Technical Support

  • Customers should contact the DoIT Help Desk or email cci-virtualization@wisc.edu with support requests.
  • CCI Private Cloud technologists will respond to all support requests by the end of the following business day.
