The Associated Students of Madison (ASM) is first and foremost a grassroots organization that connects students, ideas, and resources using community organizing principles. Our mission, detailed in the constitution, is to expand student power, promote education as a basic human right, protect civil rights, fight for the ability of students and UW employees to live without undue financial stress, and defend the right of students and employees to organize in their own interests. ASM is composed of 50 elected or appointed students, 50 student employees, 12 professional staff and 200 student appointees on committees that hold legal rights to recommend university policies, budgets, and candidates for UW employment.

Main Branches of ASM
Student Council
Comprised of 33 elected student representatives from each college including graduate and special students. Student Council representatives are chiefly responsible for exercising the legislative powers and duties as stipulated by Wisconsin State Statute 36.09(5). Student Council appoints ASM leadership, confirms student appointments to committees, adopts budgets and policies pertaining to students, and supports the mission of the association by advocating on issues important to students.

Open Committees
The five open committees meet once a week for about an hour and are the main drivers behind grassroots campaigns. Any student can show up to a committee meeting at any point of the year to express opinions and help guide the committee. Campus Relations works on student recruitment and keeping students up to date on ASM events and issues. The Equity and Inclusion Committee works on ensuring the whole student body is welcome on campus and tackling any issues that unfairly affect a group. The Legislative Affairs Committee works on lobbying the city and state legislature for students' interests. The Shared Governance Committee ensures that students are active participants in the immediate governance of and policy development for their university by
appointing over 200 students to one of the 85+ closed committees. Finally, the Sustainability Committee works on running campaigns related to environmental sustainability.

Student Services Finance Committee & Grant Allocations Committee
Appointed students review and approve budgets to allocate student segregated fees toward services and activities for students. At UW–Madison, the Student Services Finance Committee (SSFC) has control over large budgets and funding support. Smaller funding support for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), such as operations, events, and travel, are allocated by the Grant Allocation Committee (GAC).

Student Judiciary
The ASM Student Judiciary oversees ASM student elections and resolves disputes between ASM and other parties.

Additionally, ASM

- Advocates for students' right to participate in making university-wide decisions

- Directly serves students and student organizations through the allocation of student-controlled space in the Student Activity Center

- Funds and administers the distribution of bus passes to all students

- Operates the Open Seat food pantry, which strives to eliminate the stresses of food insecurity by providing friendly and accessible sources of food for students.
