Buying Microsoft Project at UW-Madison
UW-Madison departments can purchase different kinds of Microsoft Project licenses under the Microsoft Select program through the Software Order Form (Project is not available for personal purchase):
- Project Standard and Professional
- The main difference between Standard and Professional editions is that Professional can be synced with Project Server.
- One license is required for each installation.
- These are perpetual licenses, good forever at the purchased version.
- These licenses can be purchased with or without Software Assurance (SA). SA gives you the right to upgrade to any version Microsoft releases during the term of the SA.
- If you've previously purchased a license/software assurance bundle and aren't sure which versions you're entitled to use, please go to the the CSL and click on the Purchased Software link. On the resulting page, you should see the versions for which you're licensed. If you don't see them there, please email licensing@doit.wisc.edu.
- After you purchase a license, you'll receive an email with a download link to the installation files within an hour, plus an installation key if one is necessary.
- The Project downloads available after purchasing a Project license include v2016 and v2019 click-to-run (C2R) installers compatible with Microsoft 365. See https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=87819 for more info on Project/Visio/Office compatibility.

- Project Server (on premises)
- Information on Project Server from Microsoft: https://products.office.com/en-us/project/enterprise-project-server
- Project Server runs as a service application under SharePoint Server. It is included as part of the SharePoint Server 2019 installation, though it is licensed separately, which means that you must purchase a license for and run SharePoint Server Enterprise in addition to Project Server licensing.

- Please email questions regarding Project Server or SharePoint licensing to licensing@doit.wisc.edu.
- Project Online
- The Project Online environment within our Microsoft 365 tenant has not been developed as a campus service. Until it's prioritized and properly resourced, DoIT doesn't have the capacity to develop the onboarding, provisioning, documentation, support and escalation processes, and staff training necessary to offer this to campus.
