Adding a Network Printer Connected to a Print Server
Windows
Note: You will need to be joined to the campus AD, or authenticate with your AD credentials (usually NetID and password).1. Open Windows File Explorer2. In the address bar, type \\dds-printserver.ad.wisc.edu and press enter. If you're not logging into your computer using an Active Directory account, you may be prompted to login with your NetID credentials:Login: AD\NetIDPassword: your NetID password
3. Find the printer you want to add, right click it, and click "Connect..."
OS X
1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner and select System Preferences.![]()
2. Select Printers & Scanners.
3. Click on the + to add a printer.
4. Right click on the toolbar next to the search field and select Customize Toolbar.
5. Drag Advanced to the toolbar and click on Advanced.
6. Change Type to Windows printer via spoolss and type in the printer address (smb://server_address/printer_name) in the URL field. The server address is dds-printserver.ad.wisc.edu. The name of the printer will vary by department and location. If you do not know the name of the printer, connect to \\dds-printserver.ad.wisc.edu on a Windows computer to find the printer name. The printer name must be entered exactly as it appears. Type the name in the Name field, select Choose a Driver, and click Select Software.
7. Find the printer model in the list or use the search feature in order to select the printer driver. Click OK once you have selected the appropriate driver. Note - You may have to manually download and install the specific driver for the printer if not on your system.
8. Click Add to finish the installation.
9. Printer is added at the time. There way be a screen asking for more information about the printer (number of trays, duplex, finisher, etc.). If more information is not needed then the printer is created and you are finished.
Optional
If your printer ends in '-Color' please see How to Print Using User Codes to complete your printer setup. If your printer ends in '-B&W' please use the following steps to complete your setup.
1. With a document open, click File then Print.
2. Select Printer Features.

3. Change Color Mode to Black and White.

4. In the dropdown menu, click on Save Current Settings as Preset.

5. Type in a name for the Preset Name and click OK.

6. Make sure that the preset you created is selected in Presets when you print a document.
Adding a Network Printer by Hostname or IP Address
Note: Printers should only be added by Hostname or IP address if they are not connected to a print server.
Windows
1. Open the Add Printer window by selecting Devices and Printers in the Start Menu and clicking Add a Printer. Note: It may take a few moments for the window to appear.
2. Select the Add a local printer option.
3. Select the Create a new port option and pick Standard TCP/IP Port from the drop down menu. Click Next.
4. Enter the IP address or the Hostname name of the printer in the Host Name or IP Address field. Ensure that the Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use option is checked. Click Next.
5. If asked to use existing driver, choose Use the driver that is currently installed (recommended) then click Next. Note: If the customer is having problems with this printer, chose Replace the current driver.
6. Enter a name for the printer. It is recommended to include the printer model and location in the name (i.e. HP 2605 rm B214). Click Next.
7. Select the Do not share this printer option and click Next.
8. Click Print a test page to make sure the printer works. Click Close once the test page prints successfully.
9. Check the box labeled Set as the default printer if you want to set this printer as your default printer. Click Finish.
OS X
1. Open Print & Scan in System Preferences.
2. Click + to add a printer.
3. Click IP.
4. If this is an HP printer, change Protocol to HP Jetdirect - Socket.
5. Type the Hostname or IP Address into the Address textbox.
6. Enter a name for the printer. It is recommended to include the printer model and location in the name (i.e. HP 2605 rm B214).
7. OS X will attempt to automatically select a printer driver. If it does not find one, it will use the Generic PostScript Printer Driver. This driver may work for most printers. However, it is recommended that you choose the proper driver for the printer model.
8. Click Add.
9. Print a test page to test the new printer connection.
Adding a Network Printer by Hostname or IP Address
