Overview:

The Office of the Dean and Director provides overall administrative leadership and support for the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences and the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station.

Staff:

Kate VandenBosch, Dean and Director
  • Supports and promotes the college's educational, research, service, Extension/outreach, and economic development activities
  • Leads college strategic planning and priority alignment efforts
  • Directs the college's fundraising campaign
  • Advocates and serves as liaison to campus leadership and other deans on issues that have impacts in the college and beyond
  • Chairs the CALS Academic Planning Council and CALS department chair meetings
  • Supervises the work of Bill Barker, Annie Engebretson, Sundaram Gunasekaran, Carol Hillmer, Doug Reinemann, Mark Rickenbach, Angie Seitler, Karen Wasserman, and Heidi Zoerb

Mark Rickenbach, Senior Associate Dean
  • Serves as primary point of contact for departments and UW-Madison administrative units on faculty matters
  • Manages all activities related to CALS faculty, including hiring, probation, leave, salary adjustments, professorships, and post-tenure activities
  • Manages the college's administrative team
  • Works with the dean on policy issues, long-range strategic planning, and implementation of change
  • Leads diversity and inclusion efforts for recruitment and retention
  • Oversees the academic program review process
  • Provides oversight for facilities, planning, health and safety, and international programs in the college
  • Serves as ex-officio on the CALS Global Committee, Committee on Academic Staff Issues, Equity and Diversity Committee, and Facilities Planning Committee
  • Supervises the work of Doug Sabatke and co-supervises that of Sundaram Gunasekaran

Bill Barker, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs
  • Administers, manages, and supervises the college's research enterprise, including the Research and Division and the agricultural research stations
  • Serves as associate director of the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station, including management of USDA formula (capacity) funds
  • Oversees compliance and assurance with funding agencies
  • Oversees animal care and use, biosafety, intellectual property, invention disclosures, and the responsible conduct of research within CALS
  • Supervises the work of Christina Hamilton, Mike Peters, and Cheryl Deering

Carol Hillmer, Associate Dean for Human Resources
  • Oversees the operations of CALS Human Resources in all aspects of employment, human relations, payroll, and benefits management, as well as HR partnerships throughout the college
  • Serves as the CALS liaison to the campus Office of Human Resources, Benefits Services, and Legal Services
  • Oversees the implementation of HR design changes, including performance review processes, new employee onboarding, and pay adjustment tools
Douglas Reinemann, Associate Dean for Extension and Outreach
  • Provides leadership for the organization, content, and effectiveness of Extension programs and outreach activities in the college to ensure that these activities are timely and integral to Wisconsin
  • Serves as liaison between Division of Extension leadership, CALS leadership, and CALS faculty and academic staff who hold Extension appointments
  • Administers budget contracts between the Division of Extension and CALS
  • Coordinates prioritizing and filling faculty and academic staff appointments in CALS that are supported all or in part by Division of Extension funds
  • Promotes synergies between CALS Extension and outreach activities and responds to stakeholders around the state in matters related to these activities

Doug Sabatke, Assistant Dean for Facilities, Planning, Health, and Safety

  • Responsible for the budget, planning, and development of CALS facilities and remodeling projects
  • Provides oversight of construction projects on the CALS campus and at the agricultural research stations
  • Serves as the CALS liaison to campus and the state for building projects and space management
  • Serves as the college's lead health and safety officer
  • Leads the development of emergency planning procedures for college units
Angela (Angie) Seitler, Associate Dean and Chief Financial Officer
  • Responsible for all aspects of the college budget, financial planning, and reporting
  • Responsible for all fund balances and expenditures for the college, including revenue generating accounts, Trust Funds, and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association accounts
  • Oversees the college's business services, Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station (WAES), and post-award financial operations, compliance, and audits
  • Manages the distribution of funds for all college commitments such as start-ups, payouts, Educational Innovation, and summer term
  • Distributes the annual indirect cost return to departments and centers
  • Approves of all new revenue generating activities and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association financial system access and check requests
  • Responsible for all Hatch, Hatch Multistate, McIntire-Stennis, and Animal Health financial reporting to USDA
  • Responsible for the CALS Office of Information Technology (CALS IT), which supports the administrative, instructional, and research computing needs of the College as well as bridge services offered at the department level and at the campus level through the Division of Information Technology
Karen Wassarman, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
  • Manages the Office of Academic Affairs, including program reviews, curriculum and course development, and assessment for all academic programs in the college
  • Oversees student services (for prospective and current undergraduate, graduate, and Farm and Industry Short Course students), including international education, career services and internships, and scholarships. This also includes services specific to undergraduate students, such as transitional advising and dean on call.
  • Oversees the TA allocations process, Instructional Lab Modernization funding, summer session planning, and college commencement planning
  • Manages the Farm and Industry Short Course program
Heidi Zoerb, Associate Dean for External Relations and Advancement

  • Oversees college external relations efforts and stakeholder relations, including government relations and alumni
  • Leads the college communications team and effort, including Grow magazine, press releases, op-ed pieces, and social media accounts
  • Advises the dean on matters related to the college's public interaction and image
