FNS - Mapping the Shared Drive
Contains instructions and conventions regarding the mapping of network drives for the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences.
Important Windows Note
These drives should automatically map to your machine after it's deployed to you. If you don't see them, first log out of your computer and log back in. If they still aren't appearing, follow the instructions below to remap the drives.
Windows Instructions
- Open file explorer and navigate to This PC on the left side of your menu.
- Click on the three dots along the top, and select Map a Network Drive.
- The drive letter is arbitrary, although our convention suggests that your main drive will be G: and your personal named drive will be on H:. The folder path should be
\\fns.drive.wisc.edu\fns\. If you are trying to connect specifically to the Admin, Dairy, Research, or Users folders, add that name at the end.
- If you are not signed into your Wisc account on your computer, you should also select Connect using different credentials.
- Once you click finish, you should see the network drive mapped when you navigate to This PC.
Mac Instructions
- Open Finder on the bottom left of your taskbar.
- Press Command + K on your keyboard, and type
smb://fns.drive.wisc.edu/fns.
- You will then be prompted to sign in with your credentials. It is essential that you set your username as
Your_NETID@wisc.eduand use your NetID password. If you do not follow this format, the sign-in will fail. - The file share will now be available on the left side of your Finder window. You will have to repeat steps 1-2 every time you reconnect to the network and VPN, but the share path should remain in system memory.
