Beginning July 20, 2023, the legacy WiscMail MTAs will no longer accept mail from the internet. All UW-Madison M365 email domains have published MX records to direct senders to use our Proofpoint gateway for mail delivery.

Example:

wisc.edu.   14000    IN    MX    10 mxb-007b0c01.gslb.pphosted.com.
wisc.edu.   14000    IN    MX    10 mxa-007b0c01.gslb.pphosted.com.

Any partner server or service that encounters sending issues after July 20 should be reviewed to validate that they are using the new MX records as shown above and have not cached the old WiscMail MTA information:

smtp.wiscmail.wisc.edu
mta1.wiscmail.wisc.edu
mta2.wiscmail.wisc.edu
mta3.wiscmail.wisc.edu
mta4.wiscmail.wisc.edu
mta5.wiscmail.wisc.edu

Servers and applications with IP ranges assigned to the UW-Madison Campus or on RFC 1918 subnets will continue to be able to relay mail through the campus relay service.

Note: Before contacting the DoIT Help Desk, please make sure that the sending system is using the new MX records. If you are still experiencing mail delivery issues, please contact the DoIT Help Desk and provide sample message details

  • IP address of sending system
  • Sender email address
  • Recipient email address
  • Subject of message
  • Date and time when the message was sent (must be within 90 days)
