L3 Learner Upload Tool
The L3 learner upload tool is used to upload learners into CSIS to start the L3 process, which is the process that noncredit learners go through to set up their NetID to gain access to Canvas courses. This document is designed to help staff add groups of learners to an instance and confirm everyone was uploaded successfully.
Navigation instructions
- Go to CSIS-2: https://admin.csis.wisc.edu/CSIS-2/
- Log in with your NetID.
- If you are not authorized access to CSIS and you believe you should have access because you are administering a noncredit course, contact your IT administrator.
- You will see the instance list.
- Search for the instance of the course you need to upload learners into.
- Click on the instance number to open the instance for the course

- If this course is associated with a Canvas shell, check to make sure that there is an LMS Space associated with this instance.

- If an LMS Space needs to be added, you can find instructions on the KB article, How to Create Instances under “LMS Spaces”
- If an LMS Space is already associated with the instance or one is not needed, proceed to the “participants” section.

Instructions to upload learners
- You will need an excel file with the following column labels
- Required labels:
- First Name, Last Name, Email Address
- Optional labels:
- Organization, Job Title, Class Modality, Phone Number, Address 1, Address 2, Address 3, City, State, Zip Code, Country, Country Code
- You can make a copy of this Google Sheet Template with the column labels already added and input your learner information
- Save your file as an excel file
- Choose file and select file from the list

- Click Import Excel Participants

- Click OK

- Importing participants could take several hours depending on how many learners are on the list. The learners will populate into the “Upload Results” list. Once you refresh your screen, the learners, who have an import status as “Success” will be removed from the “Upload Results” list and populate into the Participants list

- Import Status
- “Pending” - give it several minutes. If after several minutes, the status is still set to pending, reach out to your department’s CSIS support contact.
- “Error” - try to upload the learner again. If it still shows “error”, reach out to your department’s CSIS support contact
- “Success” - learners have been uploaded to instance. If an LMS Space is associated with the instance then the learners’ get started email has been sent.
