Class Activity: Q&A — Environmental Impact of Human Consumption and Population

Background:

In today's activity we are going to study in more details some of the statements make in the articles and to what degree they may be true, false or partially true and partially false. First, let's look at some definitions (see below), then, we will take a survey !

Definitions

  1. A Hypothesis: (a) An “educated guess” to be disproved by the scientific method. (b) The assertion that an observed phenomena is not due to chance alone.


  2. A scientific fact: A piece of information or knowledge that results from the scientific method, which involved a set of procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge (“truth”) through recognition of a problem, collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.


  3. A speculation (guess): An opinion based on incomplete evidence; a hypothesis that has been formed by speculating or conjecturing (usually with little hard evidence);


  4. A Generalization: A statement by association.
